The Civil Police of Piauí are investigating the former mayor of Boa Hora (PI), José Resende Araújo, for his involvement in the hit-and-run that resulted in the death of Francisca Maria Cardoso, 66 years old. The case happened last Wednesday morning (7/1), in the municipality of Piripiri, in the north of the state.

According to the Public Security Secretariat, the victim died at the scene and did not receive assistance after being run over. The driver involved reportedly left the scene without providing assistance.
In a statement to the police, José Resende confirmed that he was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident. He stated that he did not see the elderly woman and, for that reason, he did not stop to provide help. The person under investigation also denied having consumed alcoholic beverages before driving.
The Civil Police reported that the investigation is ongoing and that further investigations are being carried out. At this stage of the investigation, statements from witnesses are being collected and expert reports are awaited, which should clarify the dynamics of the collision and possible criminal responsibilities.
José Resende Araújo responds to the case in freedom. The legal deadline for completing the investigation is being respected, according to the police.
