Brazil should close 2025 with record 346.1 million tons of cereals, legumes and oilseeds. The result represents an increase of 18.2% compared to 2024 (292.7 million tons).

The data comes from the estimate calculated in December 2025, released this Thursday (15) by

The forecast is that in 2026, production will be lower. According to IBGE estimates, the Brazilian harvest in 2026 should total 339.8 million tons, a decline of 1.8% compared to 2025 or 6.3 million tons.

For the 2026 harvest, the IBGE reported that it is including canola and sesame, products that have been gaining importance in the cereal, legume and oilseed harvest in recent years, even though their cultivation is still limited to a few units of the federation.

Record

For 2025, IBGE predicts a record for the historical series. Rice, corn and soybeans are the three main products in this group which, together, represented 92.7% of the production estimate and accounted for 87.9% of the area to be harvested.

For soybeans, the production estimate was 166.1 million tons, a new record in the historical series, which represents an increase of 14.6% compared to 2024. For corn, the estimate was also a record, 141.7 million tons (growth of 23.6%).

Another record refers to the production of herbaceous seed cotton, which reached 9.9 million tons, an increase of 11.4% compared to 2024.

The production of paddy rice was estimated at 12.7 million tons (an increase of 19.4%); that of wheat, at 7.8 million tons (3.7% more than in 2024), and that of sorghum was 5.4 million tons (35.5% more).

Forecast for 2026

The prognosis for 2026 released this Thursday was the third. Despite estimating lower production in 2026 than in 2025, the forecast was higher than the last forecast, released in December 2024, by IBGE.

In relation to the second forecast, there was a growth of 4.2 million tons – an increase of 1.2% in the forecast for this year.

According to IBGE, the decline in production in 2026 in relation to the 2025 harvest is mainly due to the lower estimate for corn (-6% or -8.5 million tons), for sorghum (-13% or -700.2 thousand tons), for rice (-8% or -1 million tons), for herbaceous seed cotton (-10.5% or -632.7 thousand tons) and for wheat (-1.6% or -128.4 thousand tons).

For soybeans, IBGE estimates growth of 2.5% or 4.2 million tons. Bean production is also expected to grow 3.1% in the first harvest, reaching 30.1 thousand tons.
