More than 400 unheated buildings in Kiev, where it is minus 17 degrees

In most of the city of Kiev, the heating system operates “at very low levels”, even in homes and commercial establishments where service has been partially restored. The failures began to occur last Friday after Russian attacks in the capital of Ukraine.

More than 400 residential buildings in the capital of Ukraine remain unheated due to Russian attacks that hit energy distribution systems and at a time when it is minus 17 degrees in the region.

The failures began to occur last Friday after Russian attacks with unmanned aerial devices (drones) and missiles that affected the gas distribution system and electricity supply networks.

In most of the city of Kiev, the heating system operates “at very low levels”, even in homes and commercial establishments where service has been partially restored.

Temperatures may drop further

The Ukrainian meteorological service warned that temperatures could drop to minus 20 degrees over the next few hours.

Meanwhile, the capital’s authorities have opened more public charging points for electronic devices and installed high-power generators that guarantee the supply of energy to some residential buildings located in the areas most affected by power outages.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskyy said the situation was particularly serious in Kiev but also in Odessa and the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The head of state ordered the suspension of the nighttime curfew in cases where the crisis caused by low temperatures and Russian attacks so requires.

On the other hand, Zelensky criticized Kiev’s local authorities – governed by opposition leader Vitali Klitschko – for not doing enough to deal with the situation.

Klitschko defended the functioning of the local administration and accused Zelensky of having “belittled” the work of thousands of people living in the Ukrainian capital.

A large part of the city of Kiev was left without electricity and heating for almost three days after last Friday’s Russian attack.

Today, Russia launched 82 drones against Ukraine, 61 of which were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses.
