How did Russia justify its decision?
The Russian Federation’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, has named a British diplomat and said he was an undercover agent for British intelligence. The diplomat was told to leave Russia within two weeks.
The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the British High Commissioner to Russia to complain about the situation.
According to the relevant announcement of the Russian Foreign Ministry: “It was pointed out again that Moscow will not tolerate the actions of undeclared officials of the British intelligence service in Russia. A warning was also issued that if London escalates the situation, the Russian side will respond decisively in a similar way.”
What does London answer?
For its part, the British government responded that it is “carefully considering” how to react after the expulsion of the British diplomat from Russia.
“This is not the first time that the Kremlin has made malicious and baseless accusations against our personnel. The targeting of British diplomats comes from desperation and actions like this undermine the basic conditions required for the operation of diplomatic missions,” adds the British Foreign Ministry in a statement.
