A policeman shot a citizen
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said a federal police officer shot and killed a man in Minneapolis on Wednesday night who authorities said had fled a traffic stop and then, along with two other people, began attacking the officer.
“Fearing for his life and safety as he was attacked by three individuals, the officer fired defensively to protect his life,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on social media. “The original person was hit in the leg.”
Both the officer and the person who was shot were taken to the hospital, according to DHS.
DHS said federal officers were conducting a “targeted traffic control” Wednesday afternoon at 6:50 p.m. local time. The DHS statement identified the person they stopped as an “illegal alien from Venezuela.”
DHS reported that the subject fled in his car, crashed into a parked car and then fled on foot.
When the officer caught up to him, “the suspect began to resist and violently assault the officer,” DHS said in its statement. “While the suspect and the officer wrestled on the ground, two individuals came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the officer with a snow shovel and a broom.”
The statement added: “As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the initial suspect escaped and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom.”
After the officer fired, the three individuals ran back to the apartment and barricaded themselves inside, DHS said in its statement.
It’s unclear from the release when and how the arrest was made, but DHS said both people who allegedly assaulted the officer were taken into custody.
