Venezuelan man shot by ICE agent sparks clashes in Minneapolis

The case comes a week after the death of a woman by the same immigration police, in a context of growing tensions over Trump’s immigration policies.

A Venezuelan citizen was shot in the leg this evening by US immigration police in Minneapolis, in the United States. Both the victim and the police officer are hospitalized.

The Department of Homeland Security says the man was wanted by authorities and theclaims that he tried to escape during the inspection operation, before being shot.

Dozens of protesters gathered near the scene of the shooting. There were several explosions and clashes with authorities.

The mayor of Minneapolis appeals to protesters to end the protests so the situation does not worsen.

“We cannot combat Donald Trump’s chaos with our own chaos,” said the mayor Jacob Frey.

Donald Trump had already announced the cut of funding to several cities, including Minneapolis, starting next month. This after having banned local police from cooperating in immigration enforcement operations.

ICE says itshooting occurred after attack on a federal agent

The US Department of Homeland Security, responsible for President Donald Trump’s stricter immigration policy, said the shooting occurred after two people attacked the federal agent with a broomstick and a snow shovel while he was fighting with the Venezuelan, who, according to the Department, was in the United States illegally.

Protesters throwing rocks, ice and fireworks clashed with law enforcement officers, who fired tear gas and riot control munitions into the late hours of the night after the shooting.

Journalists on the scene photographed law enforcement officers and protesters in dark streets, obscured by clouds of tear gas and occasionally illuminated by the headlights of officers’ cars and the flashes of riot control munitions.

People on the streets near the scene of the shooting threw fireworks, ice and rocks at the police and were “performing illegal acts”, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press conference in which he and Mayor Jacob Frey asked the crowd to disperse.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, accused Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, both Democrats, of inciting resistance to ICE with “hateful rhetoric,” an allegation Frey rejected.
