Trump reiterated that the United States needs Greenland for national security.
US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose trade tariffs on countries that do not support his plan to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. However, he did not provide more details, TASR informs, according to AP and AFP reports.
Trump reiterated that the United States needs Greenland for national security. He has already emphasized several times that Washington is interested in this strategically important island, which the European partners in NATO clearly do not agree with. So far, he has not mentioned that he would use trade tariffs to enforce his intention, noted AP.
Negotiations on Greenland
On Wednesday, representatives of Denmark, Greenland and the USA discussed Greenland in Washington. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen described Trump’s intention as an attempt to “conquer” Greenland, while the meeting participants agreed to continue the dialogue, according to him.
At the time the above-mentioned meeting took place, Denmark announced an immediate increase in military presence in Greenland in cooperation with NATO allies. The enhanced presence will consist of aircraft, vessels and troops, according to Copenhagen.
