Left explores symbolism of Papuda – 01/15/2026 – Politics

Parliamentarians and left-wing leaders used social media this Thursday (15) to explore the symbolic weight of the 19th Military Police Battalion, an area known as Papudinha, next to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in .

Papuda, leaders of criminal factions and politicians involved in the Mensalão and Lava Jato scandals.

The place prepared for Bolsonaro in Papudinha is 64.83 square meters, with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and outdoor area. He had expanded visits and will be able to receive permanent medical care.

Federal deputy Orlando Silva (PC of B-SP) wrote in capital letters: “URGENT! BOLSONARO IN PAPUDA NOW IT’S A FACT!”. He then stated that, with the decision, “you can now say BOLSONARO NA PAPUDA without fear of making a mistake”. He classified the cell as “a luxury for what he has always defended for prisoners” and said that it is “a privilege that other prisoners, including those on January 8, do not have.”

Federal deputy Ivan Valente (PSOL-SP) also adopted the motto with the name of the penitentiary complex and transcribed an excerpt from a news article that described the possibility of comprehensive assistance from private doctors without the need for prior communication given to Bolsonaro.

Also a federal deputy, (-RS) also used the expression “Bolsonaro na Papuda” when commenting on the decision and stated that the measure symbolizes the fight against impunity.

“Whoever attacked democracy deserves to be treated with all the rigor of the law,” he declared.

PT leader in the Chamber, Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) said that the decision confirms a solution defended by his political group. He stated that the order “dismantles the systematic and false campaign of ‘torture'” and declared that there was no violation of rights, but “compliance with the law, with respect for human dignity.”

Government minister, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) published the phrase “here you do it, here you pay” and released a video recorded in 2017, in which Bolsonaro, then federal deputy, mocks political opponents when commenting on investigations and states that “Papuda waits” for those who commit crimes.

The statement made in that context was a provocation to left-wing parliamentarians and was circulated again on the networks in an ironic way after the STF decision. PSOL replicated the same video on its social networks.

Federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) criticized the former president’s family’s complaints about the PF’s incarceration and stated that Papudinha would still be “too much” for Bolsonaro.

“For me, Bolsonaro should live his famous words: ‘Bandit must rot in jail'”, he wrote.

When deciding to transfer Bolsonaro from the Superintendence of to Papudinha, the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) stated that serving the sentence “is not a ‘hotel stay’ or a ‘holiday camp'”.

According to the order, the space allows sunbathing and physical exercise at any time, with the possibility of installing equipment such as a treadmill and bicycle. The decision also highlights the maintenance of items already existing in the previous prison, such as a double bed, TV and hot water.

Papuda has already hosted politicians and central figures in major criminal scandals in the country. Ex-minister Geddel Vieira Lima, ex-deputy Mário Junqueira and ex-senator and businessman Luiz Estevão, who were the target of accusations for privileges in prison, passed through the complex.

Also at the scene were the operator of the monthly allowance Marcos Valério, the former deputy Natan Donadon, the first sitting parliamentarian arrested by the STF after redemocratization, and Valdemar Costa Neto, president of Bolsonaro’s party convicted of passive and money laundering.

The prison also housed PT members José Dirceu, José Genoino and Delúbio Soares, detained after the Mensalão trial.

Among other known prisoners, Carlinhos Cachoeira, Cesare Battisti, money changer Lúcio Funaro and the head of the PCC (First Command of the Capital) Marcola, who spent a few days there in 2001, passed through Papuda.
