Satellite image captures the breakup of what was once the largest iceberg on earth

A 40-year journey is coming to an end. The A23a iceberg was once the largest iceberg in the world at around 4000 square kilometers. Broken off from the Antarctic mainland – the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf – in 1986, it remained stuck to the seabed for decades. After it broke away in 2000, it remained trapped in circulating ocean currents for a long time before quickly drifting away from Antarctic waters in November 2023.
