The European Commission is investigating the affairs of Sziliová’s letter about the Beneš decrees

In a letter published on Facebook, he calls on Brussels to take action against the recent legislative change in Slovakia regarding the Beneš decrees.

The European Commission received a letter from Katalin Sziliová, chief adviser to the Hungarian Prime Minister, regarding Beneš’s decrees. According to the server telex.hu, this was confirmed on Friday in Brussels by the spokesperson of the European Commission, Markus Lammert, according to whom the Commission is investigating the affairs of the letter, informs the correspondent of TASR in Budapest.

Sziliová, who is an advisor to the Prime Minister for the autonomous efforts of the Hungarians in the Carpathian Arc, addressed an open letter to the President of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen. In a letter published on Facebook, he calls on Brussels to take action against the recent legislative change in Slovakia regarding the Beneš decrees.

Criticism of the Slovak law

Sziliová called the amendment to the Slovak Criminal Code, which could even impose prison sentences for criticism of the decrees regarding the collective guilt of Hungarians and Germans in Czechoslovakia and enabling the confiscation of their property, disturbing. According to her, the amendment could, among other things, violate the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU.

According to the 444.hu server, Sziliová stated in a later interview that, in addition to the post on Facebook, she also sent a letter to the EC in which she criticized not only the amendment but also the Beneš decrees themselves. To repeated questions about whether she consulted the government about the open letter, she responded with ambiguous answers such as “I am not obliged to tell anyone in advance” or “no one raised any objections to the letter”.

The SR government wrote on Facebook that it does not see a reason to change the criminal law, but respects the actions of the chief adviser to the Hungarian prime minister, 444.hu reminds.
