Donald Trump has announced the creation of the Gaza Peace Council, which will be a key element of the next phase of the US plan to end the conflict in the Palestinian enclave. The council will oversee the transitional administration of Gaza during the reconstruction period, and former Bulgarian defense minister Nikolay Mladenov is expected to take over its leadership.
American President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the formation of the so-called The Gaza Peace Council, which is a key element of the second phase of the plan promoted by the United States to end the war in this Palestinian territory. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
- Donald Trump announced the creation of the Gaza Peace Council
- The council is part of the US peace plan for Gaza
- He will oversee the transitional administration of Gaza after the cease-fire
- A 15-member Palestinian Technocratic Committee was also created
- The personnel composition of these bodies is not yet known
“It is my great honor to announce that the COUNCIL OF PEACE has been created. The members of the council will be announced soon, but I can safely say that this is the largest and most prestigious council that has ever been established at any time, anywhere. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social network.
Trump’s peace plan
The “Peace Council” is part of Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, which led to a cease-fire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas last October. Trump is most likely to be its president.
The plan stipulates that the council will serve as an international watchdog to oversee the new Palestinian interim administration of Gaza during the post-ceasefire reconstruction period.
New organizational structures
The creation of the council was announced by Trump just a day after his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff announced that the US would now proceed with the implementation of the second phase of his administration’s peace plan for Gaza and also announced the formation of a 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee to take over the administration of Gaza.
Witkoff did not provide any details on Wednesday about the new Palestinian Authority and its composition. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdalati announced shortly before that the parties involved had “reached a consensus” regarding the composition of the 15-member Palestinian Technocratic Committee.
Possible leaders
Its personnel composition is not officially known. According to several sources of the Reuters agency, the former deputy minister of transport of the Palestinian Authority, Ali Shaat, is to be its chairman. The Peace Council, as its superior body, should be led on the ground in Gaza by former Bulgarian Minister of Defense and UN Special Envoy for the Middle East Nikolay Mladenov.
