US Embassy in Havana, Cuba
Pentagon officials have spent the last year testing a device that may be linked to unusual health problems reported by several US officials, which have become known as “Havana Syndrome”.
Almost a decade ago, the first reports of diplomatic staff American and Canadian in Cuba who claimed to be feeling health problems inexplicable.
Estes anomalous health incidents (ISA), which have become popularly known as ““, are currently still in question, with medical experts and organizations contesting their existence.
North American scientists have so far found no justification for the mysterious symptoms, with theories as diverse as a device that emits “” or .
However, a device allegedly obtained by the US Department of Defense will now be able to help US officials resolve outstanding questions about the mysterious health incidents, which have affected employees at US embassies in several countries.
The device, whose alleged existence was initially reported by , was obtained as part of a covert operationstill during the Biden Administration.
According to those responsible with knowledge of the device’s acquisition more than a year ago, it will have been acquired by Homeland Security Investigationsa division of the Department of Homeland Security, for several million dollarsalthough no exact amount was disclosed.
According to , the mysterious device allegedly produces emissions of pulsed radio waveswhich previous evaluations indicated might be able to produce consistent symptoms with what several US diplomatic officials initially said they felt, from the end of 2016, at the US embassy in Cuba.
After the initial cases of Havana Syndromean increasing number of diplomats, intelligence officers and military personnel would come forward with similar unexplained health symptoms.
Although the device obtained by the Department of Defense has reportedly undergone extensive testing, officials with knowledge of the matter claim that there is still no conclusive evidencethat the technology acquired by the USA during the covert operation is linked to the ISA that began to manifest itself a decade ago.
A Controversial Issue
ISAs have remained controversial, both in government and within the medical community, due to the lack of any definitive standard in the symptoms that can be used to characterize the alleged condition.
In the past, several intelligence assessments have examined the issue, and a major report from the U.S. Intelligence Community didn’t findat the time, links between health incidents and activities that could be associated with any foreign power.
However, the report did not exclude that potential foreign adversaries of the United States could have developed technologies responsible for the incidents.
Additionally, studies from the US National Institutes of Health have failed to determine any consistent patterns related to brain injuries or any other specific symptoms, although in some cases a increased reports of problems such as fatiguedepression and psychological issues related to stress.
Despite the persistent skepticism about the alleged condition, were carried out last year informational meetings with the House of Representatives and Senate Intelligence Committees to provide clarification on what is currently known about the device that the Department of Defense obtained.
According to officials familiar with the matter, the alleged device will likely be capable of generating sufficiently powerful radio emissions to induce health problems consistent with those reported by several U.S. officials, while maintaining small enough to be able to becarried in a backpack normal.
Few specific details were provided about the device, although officials said it contained components that could be traced to Russiawithout however explicitly attributing its origins to that nation.
Additional concerns about the device centered on the possibility of a so small and portable capacity can be achieved by multiple different nations, which could be used to cause harm to employees Americans or other nations, leaving virtually no forensic evidence.
