Banco do Brasil () denied that it had launched a virtual mobile operator (MVNO), but did not directly deny reports that it was considering entering the segment.
Last Wednesday (14), the website Mobile Times had informed that the company is evaluating proposals from two potential partners in the telecommunications sector. According to the report, the project would have been internally named BB Cel and would include prepaid and postpaid plans.
In a note, BB informed that it “constantly evaluates business opportunities”, but that there is no forecast or official announcement on this topic “at this moment”. The public bank also reinforced its strategy of acting as a platform that offers more than just banking products.

If confirmed, the launch would be the first initiative by a traditional bank in Brazil using the MVNO model, in which a company provides mobile telephone services without having its own network infrastructure. The arrangement, however, is common among fintechs, with operators such as NuCel (Nubank) and InterCel (Inter).
