Court sentences faction member accused of torture and attempted murder

The Rio Branco Jury Court convicted a man appointed as the disciplinarian of a criminal faction for torture and attempted murder, in a trial that ended late this Friday afternoon (16), at the capital’s Criminal Forum. The decision was handed down by the Sentencing Council of the 2nd Court of the Jury and Military Audit Court.

Defendant Athos Nascimento de Freitas was held responsible for trying to kill Cleber de Souza Lima during an episode that occurred in July last year, in the Cidade Nova neighborhood. According to the sentence, magistrate Álesson Braz set the sentence at 9 years and 11 months in prison, to be served initially in a closed regime.

The investigation showed that the victim was suspected of committing theft in the region and had received warnings from members of a criminal organization that operates in the neighborhood. Even after the warnings, he was again accused of new crimes, which led to the order of internal punishment determined by the so-called “crime court”.

Athos Freitas and Denis Santana Esteves would have been designated to carry out the punishment. Cleber de Souza Lima was approached while traveling along a street in the neighborhood and taken to a remote area, close to the Canarana region, where he was attacked. During the action, the victim managed to escape and flee, despite being injured, forcing the perpetrators to leave the scene.

Cleber was rescued by a team from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) and taken to medical care. Despite the injuries caused during the violence, his health was not life-threatening.

After investigations by the Military Police, the suspects were arrested and taken to the Flagrantes Police Station (Defla), where they were charged. At the trial, Denis Santana was acquitted due to insufficient evidence, while Athos Nascimento de Freitas had his conviction confirmed by the popular jury
