Danish General: We have not seen any Chinese and Russian vessels around Greenland

Trump has long maintained that Greenland is of fundamental importance to the security of the United States and has not ruled out the use of force to obtain it.

The head of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command, Soren Andersen, said on Friday that no Chinese or Russian vessels had been spotted in the vicinity of Greenland. This calls into question the repeated claims of US President Donald Trump. TASR refers to reports from Reuters and AFP.

“We don’t see any Russian or Chinese vessels around Greenland… Chinese and Russian ships are located in the Arctic Ocean, but not near Greenland,” Andersen stressed.

Invitation to exercise

He added that he invited the US to joint military exercises planned on the island this year. “Today we had a meeting with several NATO partners, including the USA, and we invited them to participate in this exercise,” revealed Andersen. Asked if the Americans would get involved, he said: “I don’t know yet.”

Trump has long maintained that Greenland is of fundamental importance to the security of the United States and has not ruled out the use of force to obtain it. This week, European countries sent a smaller number of soldiers to the world’s largest island at Denmark’s request.

Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command, based in Nuuk, provides sovereignty protection, surveillance, fisheries control and search and rescue operations in the area of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It uses patrol boats, planes, helicopters and satellite monitoring and employs around 150 workers in total.
