
Almost a third of deaths from injuries and violence in Europe are directly related to alcohol consumption.

A recent report from the World Health Organization warns that, in one year, 145 thousand people die because of serious injuries related to alcohol consumption.
The data is from 2019: alcohol is the cause of 31% of deaths due to injuries and violence to Europe.
Most die from self-inflicted injuries. I.e, are not accidents – 44 thousand fatal injuries; 83% of these cases involve men.
The second most common origin is road accidents caused by alcohol: 24 thousand deaths. Then the falls related to alcohol, which killed 20,000 Europeans that year.
In terms of age, the majority of those killed were between 35 and 39 years old. Os men die more than women.
“Men are responsible for the majority of deaths from injuries attributable to alcohol because they drink more frequently, consume larger quantities and are more likely to suffer from disorders related to alcohol consumption”, cites the .
The three countries with highest index of alcohol-related deaths are all in the east: Latvia, Lithuania and Russia.
European countries where it is consumed less they are: Greece, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy.
Portugal is one of the countries where most people die from alcohol, above 24% of total deaths from injuries and violence.
Even so, the motivating news is that, over the last 20 yearso consumption of alcohol went down in Europe: from 11.1 liters per person in 2000 to 9.1 in 2022 – a drop of 18%.
