Portuguese journalist Mafalda Anjos, 50, is the new columnist for . The publications will take place from this Sunday (18th) and will alternate, each week, in text and video formats, which will be published on the newspaper’s website and on social networks. In the print edition, the column will be published fortnightly on Mondays.

“Readers can expect independence and freedom, fundamental values ​​for any journalist,” she says. “I think I can bring Sheet a more European and, in particular, Portuguese look, with the history that the two countries have in common and that they still have to reflect on, on common issues and problems, whether global or specific to Portuguese communities in Brazil or Brazilian communities in Portugal.”

Mafalda develops her work on different platforms: she is a radio commentator and presents the podcast on RTP. In it, she investigates this predominant affect in political debate, which motivates the rise of different forms of populism in the contemporary world, according to the journalist.

Born in the municipality of Oeiras, Mafalda now lives in Lisbon. He graduated in law from the University of Lisbon in 1998 and began his career as a journalist at the magazine with stints at Focus and Semanário Econômico.

In 2008, she became editor of the main magazine of one of the most important magazines in Portugal. Seven years later, she took on the role of director where she remained until 2023. The following year, she released the book “Letters to a Decent Jovem”, by the publisher Contraponto.

The columnist’s debut takes place in the midst of one of the most disputed elections in Portugal in recent times. In total, there are 11 candidates, including André Ventura, from Chega, an ultra-right party, and Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, an outsider.

“It’s an electoral race that could mark a breakthrough, depending on the outcome, which is unpredictable at the moment. We have five candidates in a technical tie”, he says.

The winner will replace President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in office for a decade.

Mafalda says she has a close relationship with Brazil, where she has friends. She traveled to the country several times and says she was shaped by Brazilian culture, especially by the songs of Chico Buarque. “I have always consumed a lot of Brazil, especially Sheetwhich is a global reference”, says the journalist. “Brazilians are masters in communication, because they are not pretentious in their writing and the way they communicate. It’s advice I give whenever I edit someone. Brazilians have a lot to teach the Portuguese.”
