Machadová talks about new beginnings for Venezuela: We are taking the first steps towards a real transition to democracy

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machadová on Friday she declared that her country was beginning a “real transition to democracy” and that with the support of the United States and President Donald Trump, she would become free. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.

“We are taking the first steps towards a real transition to democracy,” declared Machadová, saying that it will have a “huge impact on the lives of all Venezuelans”, the entire region and the world. “I want to assure the Venezuelan people that Venezuela will be free and this will be achieved with the support of the United States and President Donald Trump,” added.

The AFP agency reminds that Trump endorsed Nicolás Maduro’s former vice president Delcy Rodríguez as interim head of state in Machado’s place. On January 3, American special forces captured the president and took him to court in New York. According to Trump, Machado does not have enough support among Venezuelans.

The opposition leader said Friday that Rodríguez was just “following orders” instead of acting on her own. The day before, the interim president met with the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) John Ratcliffe in Caracas, AFP reports.

Machado gave Trump her Nobel Peace Prize medal at a joint meeting on Thursday. “He deserves it,” she declared. “It was a very emotional moment, I decided to present the medal on behalf of the people of Venezuela,” she added. However, she did not specify whether Trump accepted her.
