Johannes Fiedler is an architect and former urban planning professor who focuses on democratic urban development and public space. And he is one of the Scientists for Future Austria who recently wrote a statement on the S1 expansion. The current calculations by the Federal Environment Agency alone, which indicate that Austria is not achieving its climate targets, make it clear to him that the expansion of the S1 northeast bypass with the Lobau Tunnel should be refrained from. Nevertheless, he has looked closely at Transport Minister Peter Hanke’s (SPÖ) argument for the Lobau Tunnel and finds that “the government’s project is based on an outdated spatial model.” The architect even found some number tricks.
