The expert shows 3 places where Czechs can reduce their electricity consumption the fastest

How to pay less for electricity? “Mostly, these are savings that you have a direct influence on at home. On how you use appliances and other electricity guzzlers,” the environmental expert points out in the podcast. “Little things in everyday life.”

Electricity prices have skyrocketed in recent years, and things won’t get any better in a few seasons. That’s not the only reason why it’s high time to discover places where you could still save money. “Actually, it’s nothing difficult. When buying new things, follow the energy labels, and buy only what you need, in the size you’ll use,” says Renata Placková, an environmental advisor from the Veronica Ecological Institute, in the iReceptář do úcha podcast. A couple of places where you can save now, but it still remains.

Fridge and freezer

You probably never turn them off, they run year-round and they also constantly consume energy. Therefore, it is good to make sure that it is not unnecessarily more than necessary. The temperature of the refrigerator should be optimally set at 4-6 degrees Celsius, the best temperature in the freezer is 18 degrees Celsius. Place them ideally in a cool place, perhaps against an external wall, but definitely away from any heat sources, including the oven.
But even more important is how you use both. Don’t leave the fridge or freezer open unnecessarily, or overcrowd them – about three-quarters of the space is ideal. Be careful of frost and dust deposited from the outside on the back wall. And check the seals once in a while.

Lighting

Never shine unnecessarily, not even outside, not even if you have energy-saving LED fluorescent lights everywhere. They also use electricity, just less than the classic ones. When buying, think about the quality of light sources. They are more expensive, but they last longer. Choose only the lighting power you need. And you can save with one more trick – modern smart light bulbs allow lighting at different intensities. The dimmed ones then consume less energy than the fully lit ones. Almost by half.

Stove and oven

Cooking is definitely the third biggest consumer of electricity in the home. That is, if you don’t heat with her. Even so, he has the lion’s share of the accounts. Of course, the most economical way is to use an induction hob and also a modern oven. But you can save money with any appliance even without replacing it.

Use the right size hotplates and always cook with a lid, it is more energy efficient and faster. Once you’ve fired up the oven, bake several dishes in it at once, because heating it is the most demanding. On the plate and in the oven, try to prepare several portions at once – you can have them again the next day without cooking. And try to at least occasionally use grandma’s trick and let the side dishes run out, for example. The rice and buckwheat will thus finish cooking by themselves from the residual heat. And you can use a similar trick on eggs.
