The hard life of the King of Kings
In January 1979, a popular uprising deposed the Shah of . Reza Pahlevi was the “King of Kings” and “Light of the Aryans”. He went into exile in Egypt with two Boeings loaded with personal effects.
During the flight, the “King of Kings” was hungry and helped himself to some stew. He had to eat from cardboard plates because his china and silver cutlery had been stolen.
When the Shah left, it was believed that Iran would have a democratic future and that Ayatollah Khomeini would be a benevolent ruler.

In April, the Shah’s powerful finance minister, Amir Hoveyda, was taken to court and sentenced to death. In prison he was kept naked, before that, he traveled around the world with an orchid in his lapel.
He was shot in the back of the head. His last words were: “It wasn’t supposed to end like this.”
