For the first time, the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo sent this Saturday (17) an extreme alert through the Cell Broadcast system to the city of São Paulo, aimed at the south and east zones of the capital, in the face of the advance of an episode of intense and rapid rain, with a high potential for risk to the population.

In just one hour, the capital recorded almost 50 millimeters of rain, a volume classified as extreme rain, according to the criteria of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The high accumulation in a short period of time caused flooding and the rapid rise of streams.

Given the scenario, the entire capital went into a state of alert for flooding, and the regions of Mooca, Ipiranga and Santo Amaro were placed on alert, due to the overflow of streams.

The objective of sending the extreme alert was to guide the population to adopt self-protection measures, avoiding risk areas, flooded roads and unnecessary travel during the critical period.

Since December 2024, Civil Defense has used cell broadcast to trigger alerts. With it, every cell phone in a given region connected to a telephone antenna and receiving a 4G or 5G signal receives alert messages.
