I’m coordinating EU response to Trump taxes

The president of the European Council, António Costa, said this Saturday, 17, that he is coordinating a joint response by European Union (EU) countries to the taxes imposed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, on eight European countries to pressure them to support his plans to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, one of the EU nations affected by Trump’s decision.

“For now, I am coordinating a response from all member states of the European Union on this topic”, declared Costa at a press conference after signing the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the EU, this Saturday, in Asunción, Paraguay.

He added that “the EU will always be very firm in defending international law, wherever it may be”. “And, of course, starting with the territory of the member states of the European Union”, he declared. “If we want prosperity, we have to open markets, not close them. We have to create economic integration zones and not increase rates,” he said.

Costa took the opportunity to make an emphatic defense of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries, and of international law, amid the offensives of Trump in Venezuela and Greenland, and of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, in Ukraine.

“We are here not only to sign the creation of the largest economic zone in the world, but also to send a very clear message to the world: what is needed are not conflicts, but peace, what is needed are not conflicts between countries, but cooperation, what is fundamental is to always defend international law, wherever it may be”, he declared.

The president of the European Council also highlighted that it is necessary to stand up against violations of international law. “If Russia invades Ukraine, we must stand up to defend territorial integrity, sovereignty and international law in Ukraine. If human rights are violated in Venezuela, we must stand up to defend human rights in Venezuela,” he stressed.
