“I spoke with (the US president) about the security situation in Greenland and the Arctic. We will continue working on this and I hope to see him in Davos later this week,” Rutte said
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this Sunday that he spoke with United States President Donald Trump about the situation in Greenland and the Arctic, following tariff threats made by the Republican to eight European and NATO countries that sent troops to the Arctic island.
“I spoke with (the US president) about the security situation in Greenland and the Arctic. We will continue working on this and I hope to see him in Davos later this week,” Rutte said in a message on social media.
Trump will focus attention during the World Economic Forum (WEF), which begins tomorrow in the Swiss town of Davos and which will be marked by increased tension between the US and Europe due to the White House’s plans to annex Greenland.
The American president will also meet at the event with the leaders of some of the eight European countries and NATO members — Denmark, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, the Netherlands and Finland — whom he threatened yesterday with a tariff of up to 25% for participating in military maneuvers in Greenland, a measure that would be in force until an agreement is reached that allows him to buy the large Arctic island.
The ambassadors of European Union member states will hold an extraordinary meeting this afternoon, as the community bloc prepares the next steps in its joint response to the tariffs.
