António José Seguro and André Ventura were the candidates with the most votes in this Sunday’s Presidential Elections, and are expected to contest the 2nd round. Cotrim de Figueiredo closes the podium, still in a technical tie with Ventura, followed by Gouveia and Melo. In fifth place, Luís Marques Mendes.
According to the first television projections, António José Seguro, with 30 to 35% of the votes, he was the candidate with the most votes in the 1st round of this Sunday’s Presidential Elections.
Secondly, the leader of Chega, André Ventura, will have between 20 and 24% of the votes, and will compete with the candidate supported by the PS in the 2nd round, on March 9th. The candidate supported by IL, João Cotrim de Figueiredocollected between 17 and 21% of the votes, still in a technical tie with Ventura.
Projections indicate that Henrique Gouveia e Melowith 11 to 14% of the votes. In fifth place, the candidate supported by the PSD, Luís Marques Mendeswhich may not reach 10%: projections point to a vote of 8 to 11%.
Projections indicate that the abstention should be between 35.6% and 43%. At 19:00, RTP announced a forecast of abstention between 37% and 43% and SIC/TVI a forecast of between 35.6% and 40.6%.
If this value is confirmed, it will be lowest abstention in the last 20 yearsthe year in which Aníbal Cavaco Silva he was elected for the first time, with an abstention of 37.4%. The lowest value ever was recorded em 1980in the second election of Ramalho Eanesin which only 15.8% of voters did not vote.
These projections confirm the 45.51% voter turnout recorded at 4:00 pm, according to data from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, above what was recorded in the last elections.
The abstention rate in the 2021 presidential elections stood at 60.76%the biggest ever, with Covid-19 and the automatic census of Portuguese abroad contributing to this increase.
