Alberto João Jardim criticizes “incompetence of the PSD leadership” in choosing Marques Mendes

Political crisis in Madeira: Alberto João Jardim defends Albuquerque's dismissal

The former president of the Regional Government of Madeira and supporter of Henrique Gouveia e Melo says that the first conclusion drawn from today’s elections “is the incompetence of the PSD’s national leadership” in choosing the candidate supported by the Social Democrats, Luís Marques Mendes.

This Sunday, Alberto João Jardim held the social democratic leadership responsible for the possibility of the Presidency of the Republic being occupied by Seguro or André Ventura, criticizing the “incompetence of the PSD leadership” due to the choice of Marques Mendes.

In a first reaction to the announcement, the former president of the Regional Government of Madeira and supporter of Henrique Gouveia e Melo, said that the first conclusion drawn from today’s elections “is the incompetence of the PSD’s national leadership” in choosing the candidate supported by the Social Democrats, Luís Marques Mendes.

“The leader of the PSD, instead of seeking a consensus in the democratic area, moved forward without trying to achieve this consensus and there is now the risk of handing over the Presidency of the Republic to the socialists again or having the extreme right on the other side”, he stated, saying that there is someone responsible for this possibility. “This person is called the ‘national leadership of the Social Democratic Party’, which once again demonstrated its incompetence”, he criticized.

Alberto João Jardim reacted on CMTV to the results of television election projections, which point to António José Seguro as the candidate with the most votes and raise the possibility of a second round being contested with André Ventura or João Cotrim Figueiredo.

Asked if there is a personal defeat for the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, the former president of the Regional Government of Madeira replied that no, because the PSD “is not a one-man party”, saying it was the generation after his that “did this nonsense”.

Alberto João Jardim foresees a second consequence of these elections, the result of Henrique Gouveia e Melo, in whose support he said he is “very proud”.

“For the first time, we managed to organize a consensus and a movement against the wrong political system that is set up in Portugal. I know that the admiral doesn’t want to form any party from here, nor is there a reason for that. But the movement has now been created, which, for now, brings the middle class together more against the system”, he stated.

For Alberto João Jardim, “the roots” were created to “challenge this same political system on a democratic basis, which is not the case with the extreme right”.
