Amir Somoggifounding partner of Sports Value, detailed CNN Esportes S/A this Sunday (18) why teams with smaller fans appear ahead of traditional clubs in the valuation ranking.
For him, having your own stadium is one of the determining factors for the market value of Brazilian clubs.
When commenting on the Brazilian reality, Somoggi reinforced the importance of the topic.
Not having a stadium doesn’t make any sense, in my opinion, being such a rich club and not having its own home.
In the international comparison, Somoggi highlighted that top clubs prioritize their own stadiums.
“I don’t see any intelligence in you not owning a stadium. You will be the only rich club in the world that doesn’t have its own home”, he reflected.
For clubs evaluating new projects, the expert issued a warning.
It has to be viable. There’s no point in going crazy.
Somoggi highlighted that own arenas go beyond games.
“When you open your arena for entertainment, shows, you can better explore boxes, bars, restaurants and commercial spaces”, he considered.
Brazilian examples
According to Somoggi, cases like and show how asset management directly influences the value of clubs.
“Atlético Paranaense invested a lot in what I call asset management. It has a first-world CT, a very modern stadium and a very well organized budget”, he commented.
Even with a smaller crowd, the structure weighs in the evaluation.
“Even if Atlético Paranaense fans are not that big and the brand is not worth that much, you have other factors that end up having a positive impact, and this weighs heavily on the valuation”, he explained.
The same reasoning applies to Red Bull Bragantino.
“It’s a club from a city in the interior, but it has become a great team in terms of investment, both in the squad and in infrastructure”, he assessed.
Clubs that “left behind”
At the other end, Somoggi explained the situation of Vasco and .
Santos and Vasco are the two clubs that fell behind in the issue of their own stadium.
According to the expert, old arenas with limitations reduce the potential for revenue generation.
“Santos plays in Vila, which is very small. São Januário is also very shy”, he analyzed.
Somoggi stated that structural decisions directly impact the growth of clubs.
Valuation is cruel in this sense. Who was left behind, the numbers clearly show.
