Collision between high-speed trains leaves 39 dead and dozens injured

Thirty-nine people died and at least 100 others were injured after two high-speed trains derailed in the city of Adamuz, near Córdoba, in Southern Spainthis Sunday morning (18). According to Spanish authorities, all survivors have already been rescued. According to preliminary information, the accident occurred when train Iryo 6189, which had left Córdoba bound for Madrid, entered the opposite lane and collided with a Renfe train traveling in the opposite direction. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the tracks. The Iryo train carried more than 300 passengers, while the Renfe train carried around 100 people.

Among the fatal victims was the driver of one of the trains, which was traveling between Madrid and Huelva, as reported by state broadcaster Televisión Española. Passengers reported moments of panic and posted images on social media showing destroyed carriages and the intense work of rescue teams.

Residents of Adamuz, a municipality with around 5 thousand inhabitants, mobilized to help the passengers, setting up an improvised reception center, distributing food, water and blankets, according to the local press.

Adif, responsible for Spain’s railway infrastructure, reported that all high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended indefinitely. In a statement, the company Iryo stated that it immediately activated all emergency protocols and that it collaborates with the authorities in investigating the causes of the accident. Renfe has not yet officially commented.
