GESOP Poll: Spaniards reject Trump’s intervention in Venezuela and disagree about Sánchez’s response

El Periódico

A notable majority of Spaniards oppose the military intervention of USA in Venezuelaa lightning operation ordered by the president Donald Trump with which the US army managed to behead the Chavista regime, capture Nicolas Maduro to prosecute him in New York and force the Bolivarian Government to become a puppet bent to the interests of Washington in the Caribbean country.

The new installment of the Spanish Political Survey of the GESOP for Prensa Ibérica reveals that 59.6% of citizens disagree with the maneuver carried out by the trump administration. That opposition is a consensus among the voters of the PSOE (78,1%), summer (94,6%), ERC (86,2%) y together (75.4%). On the other side of the political spectrum, however, those close to the PP (57.6% in favor) and Vox (71.4%) openly support the coup against Caracas. Only 8.2% of those surveyed do not know how to position themselves in the face of new interference from the White House in Latin America that takes the world back to a logic of interventionism and stick more typical of the 19th century. 1.3% have chosen not to answer.

If we scrutinize the data according to sex, both reject the operation against chavismoalthough with quite different percentages. While the opposition between men is 53%, among the women is clearer, 65.8%. Almost 40% of male respondents support it, while it only has the support of 22.6% of female respondents.

More young people, more support for Trump

Although the negative also predominates among all ages, the survey shows a significant correlation: the younger the respondents are, the more they support Trump’s military actions. Thus, those between 18 and 29 years old are the most in favor of the coup against Maduro, with 37.6% of them in favor and 52.1% against. Among those between 30 and 44 years old, 35.1% are in favor and another 56.4% against. The balance continues to tip between those between 45 and 59 years old, with 30.8% in favor and 58.8% against. Finally, only 25.8% of those who are 60 years old or older support Washington’s maneuver, while 65.3% are against it.

By disaggregating the data by geographic location, the difference in opinion is minimal. Whether they live in a town of up to 10,000 inhabitants or a large city of more than 500,000, around 30% of those surveyed support the attack and another 60% disagree.

Do I support Sánchez?

The Gesop survey for Prensa Ibérica raises a second question about Venezuela, although in an internal key. “Do you agree or disagree with the answer of Pedro Sanchez to the situation in Venezuela?” There, the response is more fragmented. Almost 33% of those surveyed support that the president of the Government assured that Spain “will not recognize” Trump’s action in the Caribbean country because it represents a violation of the international law. 44% reject this reaction and 21.3% do not know how they position themselves.

As logic suggests, Sánchez has the support of PSOE, Sumar and ERC voters. However, her position is more well-regarded among those close to the vice president’s party. Yolanda Diaz (63.1% agreement) than among their own (56.2%). Among the Catalan independentists, those who vote for the party of Oriol Junqueras support the president’s gesture in 55.8% of the cases, while support is reduced to 37.4% among those of Carles Puigdemontwho reject it 52.4% of the time. The refusal is much more pronounced among the popular (79.4%) or those of extreme right (77,6%).

Once again, the survey shows that Sánchez has more support among women. 36.8% of them approve of their response to the attack USA against Venezuela, while a tight 36.1% reject it. Among men, only 28.6% view it favorably and a majority of 52.5% do not.

Sánchez’s response also gains strength among over 60 years. Although they are the ones who support him the most (35.7%), he also arouses a lot of rejection (42.3%). Those most opposed to the president are those who have between 30 and 44 years: 48.3% disagree and 29.1% agree. However, the lowest support figure by age group is concentrated among from 18 to 29 yearswith 27.1%. The youngest people reject his statement in 39.4% of the cases, although almost one in three of them does not know how to position themselves.

Finally, by geographical dimension, the survey indicates that the greatest support for the Executive leader is found in the cities with up to 10,000 inhabitants and in those of between 100,000 and 500,000 inhabitants equally, 34.5%. The rejection of Sánchez is more pronounced in the cities between between 100,000 and 500,000 inhabitants (46%), followed by those between 10,000 and 100,000, with 45.7%.
