“I don’t know if we’re going to get there”: cyclists disappear on trail in Greater SP

Cyclists Gilberto Alves de Almeida and his friend Carlos Gomes Pereira, both 56 years old, disappeared when they went out onto a trail on Estrada do Jacubain Juquitiba, Greater São Paulo, last Wednesday (14).

They were last seen around 11am on the same day of their disappearance, which It’s been almost five days.

In an interview with CNN BrazilAna Paula Melo, Gilberto’s daughter, says that her father lives in the city of Embu das Artes, also in Greater SP, and was on vacation when he decided to invite his friend Carlos, better known as Caco, for a trail in Serra do Mar.

The friends woke up, went to Gilberto’s sister’s house, in Juquitiba, and From there they took their bikes and headed towards the place known as Cachoeira da Saleta, a region that is commonly frequented by cyclists.

Both followed the trail called Pedra Lisa towards the waterfall and, At a certain point, they noticed that they had lost their way. At that time, Gilberto sent an audio to his brother saying that he didn’t know where he was and that they would both follow the direction of the São Lourencinho River, which flows into Peruíbe, on the south coast of São Paulo.

The searches were resumed this Saturday morning (17), the Firefighters drew up a perimeter in the vicinity of the disappearance. In total, six vehicles and more than 20 men were committed, from the 18th GB (Fire Group) and Gaed (Emergency and Disaster Action Group).

Still according to the corporation, the Eagle helicopter, of the Police Air Group, and a drone were also sent to support the searches.

According to the SSP (Public Security Secretariat), the victims’ families registered a police report with the Electronic Police Station and the case was forwarded to the Juquitiba Police Station.
