Iran invites participants in anti-government protests: If they voluntarily report to the authorities within three days, they will receive a milder punishment

After the bloody suppression of nationwide unrest, the Iranian regime is turning to intimidation tactics combined with the promise of selective pardons. Police Chief Ahmad-Rezá Radan issued a three-day ultimatum on Monday, during which participants in the protests should voluntarily report to the authorities in exchange for lighter sentences.

Iran’s police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan announced on Monday that people who have been “tricked” into taking part in anti-government demonstrations will receive a lighter sentence if they report to the police within three days. This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.

  • Iran’s police chief has offered lighter sentences for protesters.
  • Participants in the protests can register within three days.
  • Protests broke out due to economic problems in December 2025.
  • The authorities restricted the internet and mobile networks.
  • Khamenei admitted thousands of victims.

“Young people who have unknowingly joined the riots are considered deluded persons, not enemy soldiers” and “the Islamic Republic system will treat them leniently,” Radan told state television. He emphasized that those affected have “a maximum of three days” to report to police authorities.

Protests in Iran

The protests in Iran began on December 28, 2025 and were sparked by economic problems caused by a sharp drop in the Iranian rial currency and a rise in inflation. They gradually spread from Tehran to the whole country. In several places, the authorities restricted access to the Internet and mobile networks, thereby trying to limit the coordination of the protests and the availability of information about them to the outside world.

After the brutal interventions of the security forces, the protests gradually subsided last week. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly admitted for the first time on Saturday that thousands of people have been killed during the protests.
