According to her latest statement, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explained to US President Donald Trump her disapproval of the introduction of new tariffs against European countries that sided with Greenland. At the same time, she added that it would not be right to further escalate the tension around Greenland. TASR informs about it based on the report of the Italian agency ANSA.
“Raising tariffs against countries that have decided to contribute to Greenland’s security is a mistake and I don’t agree with it,” said Meloni, who has friendly relations with Trump and was the only European leader invited to his inauguration last year. The Italian Prime Minister reported on her conversation with the American President on Sunday during her visit to South Korea.
The prime minister calls for dialogue
“A few hours ago I spoke with Donald Trump and told him my opinion. I also spoke with the Secretary General of NATO, who confirmed that the Alliance is starting to work on this issue,” Meloni added.
She stressed the need to resume dialogue and avoid escalation, saying there was a “problem of understanding and communication” regarding the deployment of European troops to Greenland. According to her, this step should not be interpreted as “anti-American”.
