Macron convenes Defense Council to discuss the international situation

The French President, military leaders and ministers will address mainly Greenland, Syria and Iran.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will meet this Monday with the National Defense and Security Council to discuss the international situation, particularly Greenland, Syria and Iran, the Presidency announced.

French Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, arrived at the presidential palace an hour before the meeting, which should take place around 12:00 (11:00 in Lisbon), according to the AFP news agency.

Macron, military chiefs and ministers will mainly address the issue of Greenlandgiven that the United States has threatened to impose higher tariffs on European countries, including France, that oppose its plan to annex this autonomous Danish territory.

Paris sent troops to Greenland, along with other countries including Germany and Sweden, for exercises at the request of Denmark, appearing to be a warning to US President Donald Trump, who insists on annexing the Arctic island anyway.

The French president also asked the European Union (EU), this weekend, to activate your “anti-coercion instrument” if Washington follows through on its trade threats. This tool allows you to limit imports from a country, restrict access to certain public markets and block certain investments.

The Defense Council meeting will also focus on Syria, where a ceasefire agreement was signed on Sunday, providing for the integration of powerful Kurdish forces into the Syrian state, after two days of rapid advances by Syrian troops in areas controlled by the Kurds in the north and northeast of the country.

France welcomed this agreement this Monday, expressing its support for Syria’s “unity and integrity”, while declaring its “loyalty to its Kurdish allies” in the fight against the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

Finally, Iran and the wave of popular protests, which have been harshly repressed by the regime and caused countless deaths, will also be on the agenda of the French Defense Council.
