Volume is a reliable influence, an overwhelming factor, a “force majeure” not only in interpersonal discourse, but also in music. The success of heavy metal, as every concert-goer suffering from tinnitus or sudden hearing loss knows, is only partly based on a catchy melody and two and a half chords per number, but much more on rich, stadium-shaking, power-supported volume.
