If Trump was really interested in Fico’s opinion on Ukraine, it is only because Fico’s “peaceful attitude” is mainly a criticism of the European Union, which is well received by the American president. Our prime minister has no plan for Ukraine, only empty phrases about peace and accusations that the EU is a war union.
The greatest obscenity
This gives Trump more arguments why the United States should keep its hands off this “European” problem. The American president is not worried about the fate of Ukraine. In the New York Times, he clearly said that he gave future security guarantees to the attacked Ukraine only because he is convinced that Putin will not attack it again after the war. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have agreed to it,” he declared.
Fico also boasted that he and Trump agreed that the EU was in a “deep crisis”. It is great that our prime minister agreed with the president of the most powerful country in the world. The difference, however, is that while for Trump the crisis of the Union is an advantage, for Fico (and for us) it is the worst possible news. Our Prime Minister may also perceive Brussels as his rival, but that is why he does not have to record it yet.
Especially not at a time when the European Union is on the brink of a trade war with the United States over Greenland and Emmanuel Macron is proposing to deny American companies access to the European market. Although Trump’s obsession with Greenland is dangerous and could seriously damage NATO, there is no other way to comment more aptly than Republican Senator Don Bacon: “It’s the biggest bullshit I’ve ever heard.”
But Fico can’t help himself. Even when he rightfully criticized the United States’ attack on Venezuela, it was more a criticism of the European Union. And that he is on the edge of it. “It can be big, it can be strong and at the same time truly democratic and fair. However, the Union today, through its own mistakes, does not meet these criteria,” he said in a video from early January. “The foreign policy of the European Union is dominated only by hatred and weakness towards Russia.”
Incompetent and hypocritical EU
According to Fico, the EU is “incompetent and hypocritical”. Such an attitude also suits Trump. That’s why they understand each other. Robert Fico thinks that his “sovereign” policy makes him an equal partner, or at least someone who the great powers listen to, and he can pragmatically use them when necessary. If this is not just talk for the voters, it is probably his biggest foreign policy mistake.
When New York Times reporters asked Trump why he needed to acquire Greenland, he said that it was because he saw it as something “that is psychologically necessary for success.” He does not behave like a politician, but like a developer. Agreements are not enough for him, he wants to own him.
“According to Trump, sovereignty and state borders are less important than the unique role that the United States plays as the protector of the West,” the American newspaper stated. Only his own morality will stop Trump from asserting his power globally. He admitted it himself. That’s no insurance with a person like him.
If Fico thinks that meeting in the living room means anything to Trump, he is wrong. The fact that small and large sometimes agree does not mean that they have the same interests. Trump is only interested in Fico’s sovereign views as long as they are the same as his.
