STF: wing sees Papudinha as a step for Bolsonaro to go home – 01/18/2026 – Politics

Allies of () and part of the members of the (Federal Supreme Court) assess that the former president’s minister’s decision was an initial step towards sending him to home care.

Two members of the court, from different groups, saw the magistrate’s decision as a gesture in this direction because the new location, called Papudinha, offers better conditions for the politician. For them, the eventual change so that he can serve his sentence at home could occur in the short term.

The assessment is made even though Moraes has not given any indication that he intends to grant the benefit to the former president. In the decision determining the transfer to Papudinha, the minister said that serving the sentence is not a “hotel stay” or a “holiday camp” and countered criticism from the former president’s children about the conditions in the Federal Police General Staff room.

Convicted of an attempted coup d’état, Bolsonaro was removed from home rule and sent to the PF Superintendence in Brasília in November, after trying to violate his electronic ankle bracelet, according to him, out of “curiosity”. His doctors attributed the episode to being caused by medication. According to experts, the medicines used by the former president are safe and cannot cause delirium.

Since the former president was placed under closed regime, his defense has made a series of requests to Moraes, and the family has announced alleged health risks that he would face outside the home. Mobilization increased after Bolsonaro suffered a fall, and tests detected it.

HAS Sheet A member of the Supreme Court, from the group considered close to Moraes, said that he began to defend that Bolsonaro could serve his sentence at home for fear that the Supreme Court would be considered guilty of possible complications in his health.

This magistrate believes that it is a matter of time before Moraes himself is convinced that this would be the most prudent thing to do.

The bet of people close to the former president is similar. For them, the other magistrates will be convinced of the need to change the prison regime policy and will put pressure on Moraes to make a decision in this regard.

This assessment gained strength after the attack by the former first lady and the governor of , , on the court.

Michelle spoke with both Moraes and minister Gilmar Mendes. Tarcísio spoke to four magistrates to request house arrest.

Moraes’ decision to transfer the former president was taken after these conversations. On social media, the former first lady said that the new facilities are “less harmful to your health” [de Bolsonaro] and bring him “more dignity”, but even so, he would continue with the commitment to take him home.

The facilities at the unit in the Federal District accommodate up to four people, but will be used exclusively by Bolsonaro. The space has 65 m², with 10 m² of external area, and has .

Therefore, the transfer was seen even within the Supreme Court as a gesture by Moraes. In his decision, the minister stated that the new location will allow for increased visiting time with family members, free “sunbathing” and exercise at any time of the day, including the possibility of installing physiotherapy equipment, such as a treadmill and bicycle.

The magistrate also reported that there is a bathroom with a hot shower, closets, a double bed and a TV. And, instead of a minibar, there is now a refrigerator.

In the decision ordering Bolsonaro’s transfer, Moraes also determined that the former president be immediately submitted to the official medical board, made up of PF doctors, to assess his clinical health status.

After that, he will decide whether to keep the former president in Papudinha or determine his transfer to a penitentiary hospital. This assessment precedes the analysis of the new request for house arrest presented by the defense.
