The number of deaths in train derailment in Spain rises to 39

The death toll in the collision between two high-speed trains that derailed in southern Spain on Sunday (18) rose to 39, with 152 injured, Spanish state broadcaster RTVE reported on Monday (19), citing police sources.

local time (3:45 p.m. in Brasília) near Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, about 360 kilometers south of the capital, Madrid.

More than 200 trains between Madrid and the Andalusia region, in the south of the country – including the main cities of Córdoba, Seville and Granada – were canceled throughout this Monday, according to RTVE.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez canceled all his commitments for the day, his office said in a statement.

Videos from the scene, shared on social media on Sunday, show rescuers pulling passengers from twisted and overturned carriages under floodlights. Some passengers exited through broken windows, while others were taken away on stretchers.

There were around 400 passengers on the two trains, mostly Spaniards traveling to and from Madrid after the weekend. It was unclear how many tourists might be on board, as January is not high season in Spain.

The cause of the accident is still unknown, Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente told journalists at a press conference at Madrid’s Atocha station on Sunday.
