The President of the United States, Donald Trump, told the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, that he no longer feels obliged to “think purely about peace” after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The message was published this Monday (19).
“Considering that your country has decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping eight wars and more, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely about peace,” Trump wrote to Støre. The authenticity of the content was confirmed to the agency AFP by a source close to the case and by the prime minister himself to the Norwegian newspaper VG.
It was unclear why Trump decided to send the message directly to Norway’s head of government, as the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and not by the country’s government.

In a written comment, Støre stated that he explained to the American president that the award is not decided by the Norwegian Executive. “I clearly explained, including to President Trump, what is widely known: the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee,” he said.
Trump has publicly declared that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize and, last week, he received Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, at the White House. During the visit, Machado presented his medal to Trump as a symbolic gesture.
Machado received the award for her leadership at the head of the opposition in Venezuela amid repression by the government of Nicolás Maduro, especially after the 2023 presidential election. According to her, the awarding of the medal to Trump was a “recognition for his unique commitment to our freedom”.

The American president confirmed on social media that he had the medal and stated that it was an honor to find it. The Norwegian Nobel Institute declared, before the visit, that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be withdrawn, transferred or shared after it has been awarded, in accordance with the foundation’s statute and Alfred Nobel’s will.
The new complaint also comes in the context of Trump’s push for the annexation of Greenland, with .
This Monday, Trump said that Denmark had failed to remove the “Russian threat” from Greenland, that “now the time has come” to do so.
