João Fonseca will be seeded for the first time at the Australian Open and already has a date and time for his debut. He faces American Eliot Spizzirri, currently 89th in the rankings. It will be the first clash between Fonseca and Spizzirri in an ATP or Grand Slam main draw.

The Brazilian will enter the court at 10:40 pm (Brasília time) this Monday (19/1), to face the American Eliot Spizzirri.
The match will be the second of the day at the 1573 Arena, the fifth largest court in the Melbourne complex. The opening game takes place at 9pm, between Chilean Cristian Garín and Italian Luciano Darderi.
The Australian Open 2026 takes place on hard courts, between January 17th and February 1st. The Brazilian arrives in Melbourne without having played preparatory tournaments. This is because he withdrew from the ATP 250 in Brisbane and Adelaide, in recent weeks, due to a lower back problem.

Who is Eliot Spizzirri, João Fonseca’s opponent?
Eliot Spizzirri is North American and 24 years old. He currently occupies 89th place in the ATP rankings and has been growing in recent times.
Spizzirri chose to compete on the university circuit in the United States, in which he achieved great prominence, being one of the main names during his participation at the University of Texas.
From 2024 onwards, he started to enter more professional tournaments and evolved, until reaching the top 100 for the first time, in October 2025.
João and Eliot faced each other in 2024, in the third and final round of qualifying for the US Open. Spizzirri won, with partials of 7/6, 6/7 and 6/4, and took a place in the main draw, while the Brazilian said goodbye.
