A moment of attention and solidarity marked a meeting in the first round of the Australian Open, last Sunday, in Melbourne. The game between Zeynep Sonmez and Ekaterina Alexandrova was interrupted after a ball catcher felt unwell due to the high temperatures.
The incident occurred in the second set, when the young woman fell next to the referee’s chair. Zeynep Sonmez was the first to react, immediately running to help, while Alexandrova went to a refrigerator on the court to get bags of ice. The ball catcher received medical assistance and the match was stopped for a few minutes, at a time when the thermometers were around 28 degrees.
After the game, the Turkish tennis player highlighted the importance of the gesture, stating that acting was just a natural reaction to the situation.
Respect to Zeynep Sönmez who went to help this ball kid who fainted beside the court ❤️
