Denmark is asking for a permanent NATO presence in Greenland in response to Donald Trump’s ambitions

Denmark has taken a major diplomatic step to protect its territorial integrity. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has officially asked the North Atlantic Alliance to establish a permanent mission in Greenland, which would serve as a counterweight to the growing ambitions of Donald Trump.

Denmark has asked the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) for its permanent presence in Greenland, which US President Donald Trump wants to acquire for the US. For this purpose, according to the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the strengthened presence of NATO in the Baltic Sea and the Baltic States could serve as a model. This was reported by the DPA agency, writes TASR.

  • Denmark demands a permanent NATO presence in Greenland.
  • He suggests a strengthened NATO presence in the Baltic Sea as a model.
  • Donald Trump repeatedly shows interest in Greenland.
  • Greenland refuses to join the US.

NATO mission in the Arctic

The proposal to establish NATO missions in the Arctic region was expressed by Danish Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen and Greenlandic Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldtová at a Monday meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. According to Frederiksen, he “positively accepted the stronger strategy of NATO”, according to the Ritzau agency.

A year ago, NATO launched the Baltic Sentry operation with the aim of preventing the repetition of numerous incidents in which submarine cables were damaged by vessels associated with the so-called by the Russian shadow fleet. As part of the mission, ships, planes and naval drones patrol the Baltic Sea.

Trump’s interest in Greenland

According to Ritzau, the Danish Prime Minister suggested that the model of the Baltic Sentry mission be transferred to the Arctic. Denmark itself is also strengthening its military presence in Greenland. Last week, a multi-day reconnaissance mission took place on the island, in which Trump has recently expressed intense interest, in which soldiers from several European NATO countries took part.

Trump repeatedly threatens to seize Greenland, claiming that Denmark is unable to adequately ensure the security of its autonomous territory and its surroundings, where China and Russia are involved, according to him. Denmark and its European allies reject Trump’s moves, while Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has stressed that Greenland does not want to join the US.
