The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that, in relation to the security of the Arctic, the European Union (EU) is “completely committed”, in a speech at the Davos Economic Forum, this Tuesday, 20. According to her, the Europeans are preparing their own security strategy and reinforcing their position for the Arctic.
Regarding US President Donald Trump’s signal to apply progressive tariffs against eight European countries due to the Greenland issue, she classified it as a “mistake”, especially considering that they are historical allies.
“We consider the US people as our ally and friend. Last year, we signed a trade agreement with the Americans and, when two friends shake hands, that should mean something”, he mentioned, highlighting that the bloc’s response will be “strategic and proportionate”.
