Four shark attacks on the east coast in 48 hours forced the authorities to act: Prohibited zones apply!

Authorities in the Australian state of New South Wales closed local beaches north of Sydney on Tuesday after the fourth shark attack on a person in the past 48 hours. TASR writes about it according to the Reuters and DPA agencies.

  • Beaches north of Sydney have been closed after four shark attacks.
  • The last attack happened at Point Plomer, the injured surfer suffered only minor injuries.
  • There were three other shark attacks in the previous days.
  • The rainy weather and cloudy water probably attracted the sharks closer to shore.
  • Australian statistics show an average of 20 injuries and 2.8 deaths per year.

“A surfer… had contact with a shark and fell off his board, his board was bitten, reports from other surfers said there were multiple sharks in the water,” NSW Surf Life Saving Chief Steve Pierce told 2GB radio.

The attack happened at Point Plomer in Limeburners Creek National Park, about 450 kilometers north of Sydney. Pierce said the injured man was taken to the hospital “with only minor injuries on his leg, I think it’s just scrapes or minor cuts, so he’s extremely lucky”.

Point Plomer is famous “moderate shark activity”Pierce added. According to rescuers, the heavy rains made the water cloudy, making it more likely to attract sharks to hunt. The third attack took place on Monday evening local time at North Steyne Beach in Sydney, a man has a seriously injured leg after being bitten.

Earlier on Monday, a young surfer was slightly injured at Dee Why beach. A 13-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming near Shark Beach in eastern Sydney on Sunday. According to official figures from 2025, sharks in Australia have injured about 20 people a year over the past decade, with an average of 2.8 deaths.
