We have already grown plants in watering cans and wicker baskets. Plastic casings We replaced them with more natural ones, made of clay, wood, coconut and even sea grass. Now an interesting trend has appeared in garden fashion again and is conquering the Internet.
The new fashion uses an item that everyone has in their kitchen, but certainly not everyone would consider growing plants in it. What exactly is this about?
Everyone has this item in the kitchen, and it is used, for example, to drain pasta after cooking. A colander, also known as a colander, is a popular kitchen appliance that is a bowl with holes. It is through them that water drains from the food. The colander can also be used to rinse food.
Using a strainer as a substitute for a pot is certainly an interesting idea. Colanders ensure natural water drainage, thus reducing the risk of overflowing the plant. The roots also have access to air, which is a great advantage of this solution.
Another advantage is that there is no need to drill holes in the bottom, which is often done in the case of classic pots. They are simply already there in the strainer. And additional handles make the plants easier to move from place to place.
There is no need to prepare a colander for growing plants in it. All you need to do is wash it thoroughly and then protect its interior with some material so that the soil does not spill out through the holes. It is also worth placing small pebbles at the bottom.
You can also paint the colanders (which are usually made of stainless steel) any color to make them blend in better with the surroundings. Let’s use for this paint resistant to weather conditions. Of course, this is not necessary if you like the metal strainer.
Then you need to transfer the plant together with the soil to the strainer. And it’s done. Finally, we place this replacement on a stand so that water from watering does not spill onto furniture or the windowsill.
Not every plant will be happy with being placed in such a colander. They will certainly all look interesting in it, but this is a solution for plants that do not need a lot of soil. We can grow succulents, cacti and herbs in this way. We can also choose small flowers or hanging plants.
Remember, however, that plants grown in colanders may need more water and that you should regularly check the colanders for rust.
