At the request of coach Hernán Crespo, the São Paulo began negotiations with Grupo City to try to sign the Argentine striker Julian Fernandezcurrently at New York City-USA. The information was initially released by journalist Uriel Iugt and confirmed by the website “UOL”.
According to “UOL”, the Tricolor football executive, Rui Costa, is already talking to both Grupo City representatives and the player’s staff. The club’s priority is to make the arrival possible through a loan, a model that has been adopted by São Paulo in negotiations for reinforcements this window.
Negotiations are still in the initial phase. People linked to the board say that the club continues to debate the conditions and limits of negotiations with the Americans.
Julián Fernández has a contract with New York City until December 2027. The website “Transfermarkt”, a specialist in football market figures, values the player at 4 million euros (R$ 25 million).
The signing of Fernández is a direct request from Crespo, who is looking to reinforce the squad. In addition to a winger, São Paulo is also looking for a midfielder and an attacking midfielder on the market.
So far, the club has already confirmed four signings: goalkeeper Carlos Coronel, midfielder Danielzinho, full-back Lucas Ramón and defender Matheus Dória.
Julián Fernández: career, playing style and moves
Formed in the youth teams of Vélez Sarsfield-ARG, Fernández is 1.83m tall and quickly gained prominence in Argentine football. He caught the attention of the international market before completing two seasons as a professional. In 2023, he was negotiated with New York City for around 5 million dollars, becoming part of the City Football Group project in Major League Soccer. Since then, he has played 77 games for the North American club, with seven goals and seven assists, as well as being called up to the Argentine under-20 team, including the South American team.
On the United States team, the player alternated moments of protagonism with periods of less use. Although he is well evaluated internally, he was unable to establish himself as an absolute starter, being frequently used throughout the matches. This lack of regularity, however, did not prevent him from being among the most promising young players in MLS at the end of 2025, appearing in a ranking prepared by league experts.
Left-handed, Julián stands out for his speed and versatility. He usually plays on the attack sides, both on the left and on the right, but has also been used more centrally, as a second striker, exploring infiltrations and finishing in short plays. The expectation surrounding his name involves the transformation of technical potential into greater performance constancy.
