Man set fire to statue of Cristiano Ronaldo in Funchal

A man set fire to the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo located next to the CR7 Museum, on Avenida do Mar, in Funchal, and recorded the act on video, which he ended up posting on his own Instagram account. The images quickly spread on social media and generated a wave of outrage.

In the video, the individual appears dancing to electronic music before pouring a flammable liquid over the sculpture of the captain of the National Team. He then uses a lighter to light the fire, which ends up extinguishing shortly afterwards. During the action, the man still seems to direct insults at the statue.

An official source from the Madeira PSP Command confirmed that the police were aware of the case this Tuesday. The author of the act has already been identified and is referred to as someone known in Funchal for similar behavior, and the PSP is taking steps to locate him.

The statue of Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most visited symbols in the city, integrated into an area with a large tourist influx and associated with the international promotion of Madeira. So far, no official information has been provided about any damage caused to the sculpture.

The case must now be analyzed by the authorities, which could constitute a crime of damage to public property.
