Mortgage credit: Caixa is convincing younger people

Caixa Geral de Depósitos

A third of people under 35 applied for a home loan from a public bank in 2025. In total, 23 thousand contracts.

Portuguese banks registered almost 23 thousand credit contracts housing credit under the State guarantee schemebetween January and November last year.

These are data from Banco de Portugal for the first 11 months of 2025, which corresponded to a total value of 4.5 billion euros.

During this period, explains , the amount of public guarantee already used was 626 million euros – practically 53% of the total budget made available by the State.

This public guarantee has been most evident in loans made in interior from Portugal; Greater Lisbon is the region that uses the measure least.

There were a total of approximately 2,500 contracts with State guarantee, in November alone; there had been more than 2,600 the previous month.

According to Banco de Portugal, contracts with a public guarantee – also in November – were almost half (47.8%) of the total number of mortgage credit contracts.

The percentage rises (50.2%) when it comes to people up to 35 years oldfor the purchase of own and permanent housing.

And in this chapter, the Caixa Geral de Depósitos has stood out.

According to its own figures, last year more than 22,500 young people under the age of 35 purchased a home with financing from Caixa Geral de Depósitos.

In other words, it is basically one third of young people. One in three people under 35 years of age prefers the public bank when taking out a loan to buy a house.
