Rain worsens crater situation on BR-364; highway connects Acre to the rest of the country

The heavy rains recorded in recent days in Rondônia have reignited the alert about the safety of BR-364, the main highway connecting Acre with the rest of the country. In Vilhena, an old crater has advanced again and is now around 1.5 meters from the runway, a situation that is especially worrying for people from Acre, who depend on the road to transport cargo, food and travel between states.

The affected section is at the exit from Vilhena towards Porto Velho, in an area close to private properties. The problem, which has been going on for years, is not part of the Nova 364 concessionaire’s contract and has been closely monitored by drivers and residents of the region, due to the increasing risk of the highway being compromised.

BR-364 is considered the backbone of Acre’s road system, connecting the state to Rondônia and, from there, to the Center-West, Southeast, South and Northeast regions of Brazil. Any interruption or restriction in traffic can have direct impacts on the supply of essential products and the Acre economy.

According to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), the bidding process for the containment and recovery work in the area has already been completed. The expected investment is approximately R$50 million, with the winning company already hired. Work is expected to begin in early February. Until then, the site remains under constant monitoring, especially after the increase in rain, which intensified soil erosion in recent days.
