The president of the Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) of the Senate, Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), stated this Monday, 19, that he had information that the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and the former commander of the House Arthur Lira (PP-AL) pressured members of the Federal Audit Court (TCU) to reverse the liquidation of the Master bank. Renan did not give details about what this performance would have been like.
“I have information that the current president of the Chamber of Deputies and the former president of the Chamber of Deputies have pressured and continue to pressure the Federal Court of Auditors, in fact, a sector of the Federal Audit Court, so that the Court liquidates the liquidation”, declared the MDB senator, in an interview with GloboNews. Renan is Arthur Lira’s political opponent in Alagoas.
Asked if Renan was referring to Motta and Lira, the senator confirmed: “Exactly, it is the information that I received, not only from that procedure, but from several other procedures that the Federal Court of Auditors made confidential, which have the same origin, the same pressure, from President Hugo Mota and the former president of the Chamber.”
Toffoli
Renan Calheiros said he was surprised at the decisions made by Federal Supreme Court Minister Dias Toffoli in the case involving the bank.
“We, in the Legislature, are not the ones who are going to place limits on Minister Dias Toffoli, but the way he took control of the investigation was strange and the way he transferred the secrecy discovered in the investigations to the president of the Senate was very strange,” said the senator.
‘BC was slow to act’
Renan Calheiros criticized the action of the Central Bank (BC) in the case. According to the parliamentarian, the municipality remained “arms crossed”.

“We have to hold Galípolo and the Central Bank accountable and find out why it took them so long to liquidate the Master bank”, declared the senator.
working group
Renan said that CAE will install the working group that will supervise the investigations into the Master case in the first week of February. The group was created last week with seven members, under the coordination of Renan. The senator says he will expand the group by four more members, after being approached by the senators.
According to the senator, the group will still define its priorities, but will have to hold public hearings and may, depending on the Senate plenary, request breaches of confidentiality.
“We are going to hold public hearings and we are going to request all confidential information, because Complementary Law 105 says that the Central Bank and the CVM are obliged to send the information to the commission, which fulfills an exclusive supervisory role, even if it is confidential”, said the president of the CAE.
