Spain: investigation finds flaw in the line where 40 people died

Authorities remain at the scene, but there are already signs that point to the impossibility of human error

Experts at the scene of what killed at least 40 people in Spain found a broken joint in the rail area.

According to the agency, which cites a source involved in the investigation, technicians on site identified some wear on the joint between the rail sections, known as the junction plate.

This points, according to the investigation, to a fault that had already existed for some time, and which could be the cause of the accident that ended up causing a high-speed train to derail, with another train ending up hitting it – it was about to pass 20 seconds later – as it did not have time to deviate.

The scene in Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, continues to be one of authentic chaos, with dozens of people working to remove the debris and try to identify a cause for the accident.

The fault found meant that there was a space between the rail sections that opened up as the trains passed, further aggravating the problem.

According to the Reuters source, investigators believe that this piece could be crucial in identifying the cause of the accident that involved the two trains.

The Spanish Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) has not yet commented on this information, continuing to work on the ground to understand all the details.

Although he did not provide any explanations, the president of Renfe, the company that operated the second train, admitted to Cadena Ser that this accident happened under “strange conditions”.

“Human error is practically ruled out”, said Álvaro Fernández Heredia.

As for the accident, it is already known that a large part of the train passed through the area without problems, but the last of the eight trains ended up derailing, dragging the two that followed with it.

The Reuters agency source indicates that a photograph shared by the Guardia Civil shows this same failure in the Carris. This is an area marked by investigation with evidence markers.

The accident also injured more than 100 people, 48 of whom remain hospitalized, said the president of the regional government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, in statements in Adamuz, alongside Pedro Sánchez.
